Oaklands

Oaklands is a contemporary transformation of a private home near Lydney, on the edge of the Forest of Dean.

Wall Architecture helped turn a cold and dated 1950s bungalow into a distinctive, energy-efficient dwelling.

From dated bungalow to contemporary home

The original property no longer met the expectations of modern family life. Its appearance and environmental performance both needed a comprehensive rethink.

The project was approached as a complete transformation rather than a series of isolated alterations. The result gives the existing home a confident new character while making better use of its original footprint.

A new architectural identity

The remodelled upper level is wrapped in vertical timber cladding. This introduces warmth, texture and a strong connection with the wooded setting.

Crisp white rendered walls retain a calm, simple base at ground-floor level. Dark window frames and carefully controlled detailing bring the old and new elements together.

Light and views

Generous glazing brings daylight deep into the home and opens the upper floor towards its surroundings. The large glazed gable creates a clear focal point and gives the redesigned roof form a contemporary finish.

The finished exterior is simple and robust. Natural timber, render and dark metalwork create a restrained palette that will continue to settle into the landscape over time.

An energy-efficient transformation

Oaklands shows how an existing bungalow can be reinvented instead of replaced. The completed project is warmer, more efficient and better suited to contemporary living.

The transformation has also given the property a distinctive identity that responds to its position near the Forest of Dean.
